PVP – the Hunter and Key Bindings

Seriously, all the good sites say that having actions mapped to keys on your keyboard increases reaction time and thus increases your performance in Arenas.

…actually this DL comic will sum up the argument nicely…

The hunter forums have a great post of key binding where everyone shares their preferred setup. I plan on doing some more reading before I am set in stone.

You can check out my current keyboard setup (it is ever-changing @ the moment – but I am slowly finding a setup that works for me.)

Reading about key binding:

I am terrible for just clicking on my screen – I have elaborate macros, I make a macro button and then I mouse click it as needed. Right click will do one thing and left click another – some macros are designed to cycle through a bunch of actions, others have situational codes in them: IF blah exists THEN do action one here ELSE action two is the go MAYBE action three if its up AND would you like fries with that?

My Macros are fancy pieces of art that I have ‘borrowed’ from all over the net.

But it is time for me to grow up – time for me to compromise and map basic actions to accessible keys. The Nostromo Speedpad would have been awesome for this, unfortunately I couldn’t get my hands on it … small town you may know and relate.

As such I am working with the Logitech G15 keyboard.

Pros:

  • Familiar setup
  • 15 extra delay macroable keys
  • It can light up the keys *squee*
  • 3 different keyboard profiles for each game – I can do hunter/shaman/priest which are my current main classes.

Cons:

  • The familiar set up means when the heat is on I have a habit of returning to my old ways of maneuvering
  • I can see the time on the LCD and know I have been playing for far too long

I am having trouble deciding on an efficient action key map – I am thinking of moving my movement keys across by one (ESDF) like the old school way, for one thing it may eliminate that annoying trick I have of banging Caps Lock and accidentally yelling in-comings in battlegrounds.

“INC MINE 5 FARM SIDE”- really…it just doesn’t look professional or Orc like to be screaming like a wussy.

It’s sensible to map the CC above movement keys even if I have been relying on mouse for speedy turns. I still use the keyboard for strafe (often underused movement, but it is faster than attempting to run backwards and can get you out of the odd tight situation.)

So somewhere above ESDF I need:

  • Concussive shot
  • Wing clip
  • Arcane shot (works while on the run)
  • Viper Sting (or maybe Serpent for rogues)
  • Ice Traps

Currently I play like someone steering a fish tank full of water o_O because I have no knee-jerk memory of where all my shots and casts are I am currently actually slower than before when I was a ‘clicker’ /sigh – more BGs for me.
